COLOUR: Black
TEXTURE: Smooth Textured
FIRING RANGE: 1080°c – 1260°c
Philip uses Valentine’s Professional black clays to make slabbed lidded boxes and also a range of thrown pieces. The boxes have influences based on antique coffers combined with floral images which use sgraffito marks to create the decoration. Layers of coloured slips are used to build up the surfaces on both the boxes and thrown pieces. Some are multi-fired with the pots being rubbed down between firings to achieve a worn/textured surface. All work is fired in an electric kiln to 1250 degrees centigrade. Philip also works in porcelain making a range of thrown work which contrasts in style to his other work.
Philip set up The Round House Gallery with Leah his partner in 1989 within the High Street of Tutbury, Staffordshire. The aim was to promote the exhibiting and selling of leading craft potters work made in the UK. This goal remains unchanged over twenty five years later. By 1991 the Gallery had been selected for quality by the Crafts Council and this acknowledgement helped get the gallery more established and also saw visitors and customers beating a path to our door from further afield.
