After 115 years, Fenton finally has its own ceremonial mace — and what an incredible journey it’s been!
This remarkable project marks a significant milestone for the people of Fenton, and we are beyond proud to have played a part in bringing it to life.
The mace, a striking symbol of community pride and local heritage, was designed by the creative minds of Staffordshire University students. Their vision beautifully captures the identity and strength of the Fenton community, a town with deep-rooted history and a bright, bold spirit.
The final design was selected by a judging panel featuring renowned potter Keith Brymer Jones, our very own Managing Director Hannah Ault, and Fenton-born Lord Mayor Lyn Sharpe. In a powerful gesture of unity, two student teams were brought together to combine their ideas — a reflection of the collaboration and togetherness that defines Fenton.
With generous contributions from Valentine Clays, Duchess China, CJ Skelthorne Jewellers, KMF Metals, and AJ Phillpotts, the ceremonial mace was crafted into a beautiful work of art. At its core is a Fine Bone China bulb, topped with a red disc made from Fenton clay, a tribute to the people and industry that lie at the heart of the town.
The mace was first unveiled at Fenton Town Hall, where it was admired by a proud and emotional community. It was then blessed at Christchurch before being ceremoniously marched into the square. A moment filled with meaning and celebration.
Under clear blue skies and the uplifting sounds of a local brass band, speeches were given by Lord Mayor Lyn Sharpe and Lord Lieutenant Ian Dudson, highlighting the resilience, creativity, and spirit that defines Fenton. The day was made even more special by a stirring poem from Staffordshire Poet Laureate Nick Degg, whose words captured the moment perfectly.
The celebration concluded in true style with a ride to the Civic Centre aboard vintage open-top buses, a joyful and nostalgic send-off to a truly historic day.
This was more than just the unveiling of a ceremonial mace it was Fenton’s long-awaited moment in the spotlight, and a powerful symbol of everything the community stands for.
