Thermal Expansion

Thermal expansion rates serve as a useful tool for matching glaze to clay.

Understanding Thermal Expansion

For the perfect fit the glaze needs to be a lower thermal expansion than the clay.

When glaze and clay are perfectly married, the body compresses the glaze and makes the ceramic tougher.

If compression doesn't occur, the glaze will be under tension that will lead to crazing which is undesirable unless you specifically wish to create a crackled glaze effect.
