Standing proudly at the entrance of the Spode Heritage Centre, a new and striking art installation has captured the hearts of visitors and locals alike. Cobalt Chronicles, created by the incredibly talented ceramicist Jaz Simpson, is a powerful visual tribute to Stoke-on-Trent’s rich ceramic legacy.
The mural blends the past with the present through hand-painted recreations of historical pottery industry photographs and iconic local landmarks – all meticulously rendered on Johnson Porcelain Tiles. Delicate sprig-molded porcelain florals add texture and detail, while a bold, graffiti-painted floor beneath anchors the piece in modern artistic expression.
This intricate installation doesn’t just celebrate heritage – it invites connection, conversation, and reflection. Designed to inspire and provoke emotion, Cobalt Chronicles will remain on display at the Spode site for the next five years.
We caught up with Jaz on-site to learn more about the inspiration behind this captivating mural, her creative process, and what it means to contribute to the visual storytelling of Stoke-on-Trent through clay, cobalt, and community.
