Curtis Texture Paste - Cobalt Oxide

£7.74
Description

This cobalt coloured oxide is a decorative textured ceramic coating, created by ceramic artist Eddie Curtis, and can be used on its own or with a porcelain slip to produce a diverse selection of organic, textured surfaces. Whether oxidised or in reduction, cobalt is very strong but with care, this texture paste can be blended with Curtis Texture Paste - Neutral to give delicate hues of blue.

Available in 500g tubs

Tub Size: 500g
Usage

Ideally used with a stiff brush, flat wooden tool or palette knife. Apply paste directly to soft or leather hard clay creation. Build up areas of varying thickness with your tools to create a textured pattern. To maintain structure rapidly dry surface with heat such as a blow torch or heat gun. Once paste is dry and firm to touch, you can brush a layer or Porcelain slip on top. Experiment with varying thicknesses to achieve your desired result. Thin layers will allow more of the underlying colour to be visible.

ARTIST INSPIRATION

Eddie Curtis

Eddie Curtis, a ceramic artist, developed Curtis Texture Paste to achieve the distinctive textures featured in his work.

He applies the paste to both sculpted and hand-built pieces crafted from ES40 Earthstone Hand-Building Clay and then overlays them with a blended slip version of Audrey Blackman Porcelain.

Curtis fires this unique combination in a flame-fired kiln under a reduction atmosphere, reaching stoneware temperatures of approximately 1300°C. He also explores oxidised electric firings, which introduce new parameters for further experimentation.

Curtis exhibits work internationally and as earned significant acclaim, including the Detlef-Schmidt-Wilkens Ceramic Prize at Oldenburger Keramiktage in Germany in 2016 and again in 2017, with the latter award specifically recognising his innovative surface treatment techniques.
