Jean White

Jean White is a designer-maker specialising in ceramics, with a background as a professional illustrator. She applies her illustration skills to carving and modeling drawings into clay, creating her own plaster molds from these carvings. Each piece is then slip-cast in either porcelain or parian clay.

Passionate about raising awareness of the conservation status of endangered British bird species, Jean has witnessed the decline in bird populations first hand since childhood in the 1960s. Drawing inspiration from traditional techniques used in Wedgwood’s Jasperware, she combines sprigged work with clean, contemporary forms. Her imagery plays on the visual similarity between fossils and the low relief of ceramic sprigs, serving as a powerful metaphor for the fragility of native bird species.
