LoStone Mid Fire Glazes have a firing
range of 1080–1220°C and a reactive firing range of 1120–1220°C giving you flexibility depending on your chosen clay body and desired finish.
Some colours are reactive and may develop different effects across the firing range. Always check the individual glaze guidance and we recommend creating a test tile at your chosen firing temperature first.
The collection has been created as the perfect partner for LoStone, but can also be used on a variety of
compatible ceramic bodies, including porcelain and earthenware.
As different clay bodies can influence glaze colour and behaviour, we always recommend testing your chosen combination first.
For brush-on application, we recommend 2–3 even coats, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.

Yes. Glaze ingredients can naturally settle during storage, so stir thoroughly before use to ensure the glaze is evenly mixed. If
you're glazing for an extended period, it's also good practice to periodically
stir the glaze during use.
A soft, good-quality glaze brush or mop brush that holds plenty of glaze will help you achieve smooth, even coverage. Different brushes can deposit different amounts of glaze, so whichever brush you choose, consistency is key.
Yes. The LoStone Mid Fire Glaze Collection is fully intermixable, allowing you to experiment and create your own colours and finishes. Keep a record of your mixing ratios and create a test tile first so
you can reproduce your favourite combinations.
Yes. LoStone Mid Fire Glazes can be layered to create different colours and effects. When layering, we recommend applying a maximum of three coats in total not three coats of each colour. For example, you could apply two coats of one glaze followed by one coat of another. Different combinations can produce varying results depending on the colours used, clay body and firing conditions, so we always recommend creating a test tile first to see how your chosen combination behaves.
Glaze samples are intended as a guide. The finished result can be affected by your clay body, firing temperature, firing programme, kiln, application thickness, number of coats, brush and drying time between coats. This is why we always recommend creating a test tile using your own clay, equipment and firing methods before glazing your finished piece.
A reactive glaze is designed to
develop variation in colour, tone, texture or surface effect during firing.
Rather than producing a completely uniform finish, reactive glazes can respond differently depending on application thickness, clay body and firing
conditions. This natural variation is part of their character.
Not necessarily.
The colour and composition of the clay underneath can influence the finished glaze. Due to the higher levels of iron oxide in LoStone Ember, Shale and Dune, you may see greater shade variation with Sunflower, Pebble and Wisteria. Storm, Snowdrop, Midnight, Transparent, Lagoon, Heather and Fern generally create a more consistent effect on these bodies.
We recommend testing your chosen glaze and clay combination before committing to a finished piece.
Yes. We typically recommend bisque firing LoStone before applying glaze.
This allows carbonates, sulphates and other gases to be released from the clay body. Applying glaze before this stage may restrict gases escaping and increase the risk of issues such as blistering or pin-holing.
Underglazes and engobes can be applied at the green or leather-hard stage, providing sufficient areas remain exposed to allow gases to escape during bisque firing.
The following can be used as a guide:
1. Temp: 0–300°C / Rate: 60°C/hour
2. Temp: 300–650°C / Rate: 80°C/hour
3. Temp: 650–1000°C / Rate: 100°C/hour
4. Temp: 1000°C / Rate: 30-minute soak

Kilns and firing conditions vary, so programmes may need to be adjusted for your individual equipment and load.
The following can be used as a guide:
1. Temp: 0–1050°C/ Rate: 120°C/hour

3. Temp: 1160°C/ Rate: 20-min soak

Again, this should be treated as a starting point and adapted where necessary for your kiln, load and chosen glaze.
Suitability for food contact depends on the finished fired piece, including the glaze, clay body, application and firing conditions. Always follow the recommended application and firing instructions and ensure your clay and glaze are properly matured. Where food-contact safety needs to be verified, particularly for commercially produced functional ware, we recommend having representative finished pieces independently laboratory tested.
Keep the bottle securely closed when not in use and protect it from extreme temperatures, particularly frost. Each 550ml bottle also features a reusable inner cap, helping to provide an additional seal and reduce the risk of leaks during storage.
Some settling during storage is
normal. Stir the glaze thoroughly before use to return it to an even
consistency.
Different manufacturers' glazes can
have different formulations and firing characteristics, so results cannot be
guaranteed when combining products from different ranges.
