LoStone: Redefining Stoneware for a More Sustainable Future

We are proud to announce the launch of LoStone, the UK’s first low-fire stoneware clay – a landmark development that combines the strength, stability and surface quality potters love, with significantly lower firing temperatures

After decades of research and development, LoStone represents a major milestone in our 46-year history. Designed with both creativity and sustainability at its core, LoStone allows makers to achieve a vitrified stoneware finish at much lower temperatures than traditional stoneware clays.

Opening New Possibilities for Potters

For generations, stoneware has required high firing temperatures, often placing it beyond the reach of smaller studios, home potters, schools and shared kiln spaces. Many kilns simply aren’t capable of reaching those temperatures, and for those that are, rising energy and maintenance costs can be prohibitive.

LoStone changes that.

By firing at substantially lower temperatures, LoStone makes stoneware accessible to a far wider community of makers – without compromising on performance. Potters can enjoy the familiar durability and surface qualities of stoneware while reducing energy use, kiln wear and firing costs.

Hannah Ault our CEO of Valentine Clays, explains:

“LoStone is the UK’s first low-fire stoneware. We’ve redefined what’s possible to give makers everything they love about stoneware, including strength, stability and surface, but with a reduction in the cost of firing and kiln maintenance.

It means a new generation of potters can now work with and enjoy the dynamic qualities of this enduring clay, without the energy demands.”

Crafted for the Conscientious Maker

At Valentine Clays, sustainability and innovation go hand in hand. LoStone is part of our ongoing commitment to developing clay bodies that support creativity while responding to the environmental challenges facing the ceramics industry.

Our technical team has worked tirelessly to deliver a clay that not only performs exceptionally, but also supports a more energy-efficient approach to making. This breakthrough allows potters to focus on their work, confident that their firing process is more economical and environmentally conscious.

A Palette Inspired by Nature

LoStone is available in six natural colourways, inspired by the elements of earth, air, fire and water:

  • Frost

  • Dune

  • Shale

  • Sea-Mist

  • Drift

  • Ember

Each colour has been developed to offer subtle, earthy tones that enhance form, texture and surface decoration.

Looking Ahead

The launch of LoStone reflects Valentine Clays’ long-standing belief in collaboration with the pottery community. By listening to makers and responding to their needs, we continue to challenge expectations and breathe new life into ceramic materials.

“We want to challenge the status quo,” Hannah adds. “A hallmark of our business is fostering a sense of community and collaboration among potters, artists and enthusiasts. LoStone is a direct result of that approach.”

LoStone is now available to potters across the UK, with plans to expand into international markets in the future.
