ARTIST INSPIRATION

Jim Robison

Jim Robison is a distinguished ceramic sculptor and educator whose work embodies a deep reverence for history, nature, and the transformative magic of the firing process. Born in Independence, Missouri in 1939 and originally trained as a jet engine mechanic in the USAF, he later embraced fine art and relocated to Yorkshire, England in 1973.

In 1975, he established Booth House Gallery as both a studio and a dynamic exhibition space for contemporary ceramics.

His portfolio features a striking range of slab-ware vessels and large-scale commissions, characterized by their robust forms and layered textures. Influenced by the rugged beauty of the Pennine landscape and the enduring character of local dry stone walls, Robison employs innovative techniques, such as using antique mangles to create unique, weathered edges and applying multiple glazes in reduction firing to infuse each piece with a sense of history and organic evolution.

As an active member of the ceramics community, he has enriched the field not only through his compelling work but also by sharing his expertise in lectures, demonstrations, and publications.
