By supplying fluxes to the formulations, it lowers the melting temperature of materials and aids with firing. Moreover, it adds necessary levels of alumina and silica for strength and durability in the end product.

Soda Feldspar lowers the firing temperature of clays and glazes. 

Often used to lower the firing temperature of stoneware glazes when kilns have a limited firing capacity.
